American energy can lead the way — if the White House lets it

As the editorial board recently pointed out in its Feb. 26 editorial, the “decision by the Biden administration to delay new oil and gas leases on federal lands is unconscionable” amid soaring inflation and the deepening Russia-Ukraine crisis. The White House’s string of perplexing policy decisions — including the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline — hamstring American energy leadership and can put upward pressure on prices.

Expanding natural gas and oil production — and greenlighting pipeline projects, the safest, most efficient way to deliver energy – is necessary to meet the growing demand for affordable, reliable energy while helping provide for America and our allies. The U.S. also has some of the strictest safety standards and environmental regulations for producing and transporting energy.

Natural gas and oil account for nearly 70 percent of energy consumption in the U.S and will remain a leading source of energy for decades to come. According to the International Energy Agency, natural gas and oil will supply nearly 50 percent of the world’s energy in 2040.

Pennsylvania plays a key role in the domestic development of natural gas, creating jobs and supporting communities while generating billions of dollars annually for our state and national economy.

Restricting access to abundant U.S. energy is the opposite of what the country, and the world, needs right now. After all, we need energy to power our everyday lives — and that energy should be American-made, with Pennsylvania leading the way.
